Scoring and Score Sheets
The VNEA 8 Ball Teams Format of play uses a scoring system to determine which team is the winner of a match. The scoring system is very simple to follow with the winner of a frame getting 10 points, while the loser gets one point for each of their balls that are sunk (irrespective of who sunk them). In summary the winner of a frame gets 10 points, while the loser of the frame gets between 0 and 7 points.
When playing in teams of three, each player plays three frames (one frame against each of the opposing teams members). There are three rounds in a match and each round consists of three frames. At the end of the match, once all three rounds (nine frames) have been played, the scores of all the players in the team are added up. The team that has the most points wins the match. If, at the end of the match, scores are tied, the teams play the final round again.
Have a look at the example score sheet below which features a match between Blue Lake High School and Redhill Secondary School. In the first round Harry plays Angie and loses 7-10; Jess plays Kerry and loses 3-10; and, Karen plays Chris and wins 10-0. The points total from round 1 sees Blue Lake High School tied 20-20 with Redhill Secondary School. The order of play can be seen on the score sheet with each players opponent below the Round number. For example if you take a look at 'Player H3' (Karen), in Round 3 her opponent will be Player A2 (Kerry). On the score sheet 'H' means 'Home', while 'A' means 'Away'.
In terms of whose turn it is to break the frame, the 'Home Team' breaks in Round 1; the 'Away Team' breaks in round 2; and it is alternate breaks in Round 3 with the 'Home Team' breaking first. The player whose turn it is to break will have (B) noted beside the Round number on the score sheet. For example, the Away Team Player A3, Chris, will break in his Round 2 frame against Jess.
when playing a match, players should check the scores often to avoid any disputes and confusion. At the end of the match the Team Captains sign the score sheets to verify the scores.
